Uncertainty & Error Propagation Rules

Examiners look for rigorous mathematical treatment of experimental error. Follow these three rules:

Addition or Subtraction (y = a ± b)

Add the absolute uncertainties: Δy = Δa + Δb

Multiplication or Division (y = ab/c)

Add the fractional or percentage uncertainties: Δy/y = Δa/a + Δb/b + Δc/c

Power Functions (y = aⁿ)

Multiply the fractional uncertainty by the power index: Δy/y = |n| * (Δa/a)
